The importance of reading

At Park Road J and I School we aim to develop a love of reading. Reading is the vital foundation in your child’s education. Reading is one of the most important skills in life and we all use it every day! Reading allows children to understand the world around them and experience different situations. Becoming a confident reader with a love of books is a core aim for all of our children.

We want our children to read with understanding, enthusiasm and expression, and form questions about the text. We have developed opportunities throughout school to create an environment rich in reading and we have supported this through investment in book areas in classrooms, a brand new, well stocked library and the purchase of new home reading books. In addition, we also provide children with reading opportunities throughout the curriculum.

Top tips for reading at home with your child

Reading in Early Years

In the early stages of their reading, children in EYFS are read with on a 1:1 or small group basis in school. Pupils are introduced to RWI and the Oxford Reading Tree (ORT) scheme as well as others. They will bring home a Book Bag Book which corresponds to the colour band they are on in Read, Write, Inc sessions, an Oxford Reading Tree book, a library book and a black and white version of the book they are reading in their Read, Write, Inc session

Reading in KS1 and KS2

Every KS1 child participates in Guided Reading on a weekly basis and we use a variety of Guided Reading material. We use the differentiated group approach. In addition to Guided Reading, children take home a Book Bag Book which corresponds to the colour band they are on in Read, Write Inc sessions, an Oxford Reading Tree book, a library book and a black and white version of the book they are reading in their Read, Write, Inc session

In KS2 the Guided Reading is done using a whole class approach. Children take home a reading book matched to their reading ability, in addition a reading book for pleasure.
